• What is Kahoot!? Is a game-based learning platform that makes it easy to create, share and play learning games or trivia quizzes in minutes.
• An ePortfolio is a digital collection of objects that students may create to share their work, show how they have grown as a learner over time, or to demonstrate their skills to other students, instructors or employers. EPortfolio is a personal portfolio tool for storing, organizing, reflecting on, and sharing items that represent your learning.
• Mahara is an open source ePortfolio and social networking web application. It provides users with tools to create and maintain a digital portfolio of their learning and social networking features to allow users to interact with each other.

What are They?

A useful way of evaluating learners' deep learning can happen through having students write blog posts (reflections on learning) or create a portfolio (collection of reflections and examples of work) or build a website (collection of learning examples). All three of these activities can be done with a blogging platform - like VIUBlogs (powered by the software WordPress).

This is a good ice-breaking technique for early in the term. It’s also an easy way to make large classes interactive and encourages more students to participate than regular question strategies. Use the offerings of students after think-pair sharing to lead into a lecture or discussion of class material. Into the curriculum creates the opportunity for students to use their completed ePortfolios as archives of primary sources that they can curate to produce narratives about their intellectual development. The result is a capstone course with a level of integrative meta-reflection that allows students to select.

Blogs provide a reflective space for students to record their thoughts, ask questions, engage in debate and participate in a community which extends well beyond the walls of the physical classroom. A major feature of blogs is the ability for other online readers to discuss, comment on, create links to, and share the content found on the blog. Comments are usually added to each individual entry are often left in a conversational manner. The writer of the blog can then read and respond to comments. The afforded levels of interaction available on blogs can be likened to a sort of online social activity as students can read one another’s blog and provide feedback in a conversational manner.

Ideas for using blogs in your class:

1. Create a course blog to communicate regularily with your students and invite comments
2. Have students create their own blogs to reflect on the course material and engage with one another
3. Have students create their own blogs and invite guest practitioners in to comment on students reflections
